The fatal shooting of a police officer in a custody suite in London was caught on CCTV, Scotland Yard revealed.
Metropolitan Police Sergeant Matiu Ratana, 54, was killed in the early hours of Friday when a handcuffed gunman opened fire before pointing the gun.
Deputy Deputy Commissioner Stuart Cundy said the 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder after the death in Croydon The Custody Center remained in critical condition at the hospital.
“Due to his condition, we are still unable to speak to him,” he said during a news conference at Scotland Yard.
He said the gun used in the murder had been recovered from the custody room.
“We also have the CCTV from that custody suite, which shows the facts,” he said.
“And we have a video on the body of our police officers who were involved in the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the suspect.
“Our special investigators are carefully reviewing all of these images, which will be considered along with the officers’ accounts.”
Sergeant Ratana, who died in the hospital, has been described as “large, big-hearted, kind, capable, a charming man, and highly respected by his colleagues.”
His friends say he was looking forward to his impending retirement, for which he would have been eligible in two months.
No police firearms were fired and the case is not being treated as terrorism related.
The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation for murder and the watchdog of the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) also launched an investigation.
Before the shooting, the suspect had been arrested by regular officers after a stop and search, then handcuffed behind his back before being taken to the station in a police vehicle.
Sergeant Ratana leaves behind a couple and an adult son.
