Crowds of people ran for cover as they were bathed in fireworks that fell in an illegal display.
Hundreds of people gathered in Everton Park, overlooking the city, at Bonfire Night to watch the groups launch their own fireworks.
The parking lot was reportedly jammed with people trying to find the perfect spot, but the park quickly emptied when several explosions got out of control.
A video taken close to the front, just off Everton Road, showed the crowd cheering as pyrotechnics exploded loudly in the sky.
But things quickly turned ugly when some of the fireworks were fired too close to the ground and sparks were thrown at cars and people standing on the grass, many with children.
Later, a witness told ECHO that it was “a miracle if no one was injured” during the incident and that the number of cars caused a huge traffic jam outside the park shortly before 9pm.

The same person later said that people with fireworks started shooting at each other as people tried to get away from the park.
They added: “There were hundreds there.

“The parking lot was jammed and the streets outside were full of cars and the occasional bicyclist doing wheelies.”
Organized exhibits were canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic to prevent crowds from gathering.

Earlier in the evening, Merseyside Fire and Rescue tweeted to say that they were aware of a series of illegal displays taking place across the city.
They said: “We are receiving reports of a large number of people setting off fireworks in the parks of Merseyside.
“Yes, it is Bonfire Night but this year is like no other.
“There are no exhibitions organized this year for a reason.

The fire service also issued a warning before bonfire night that no one should attend bonfires on public land due to the national shutdown.
They said, “If you see our firefighters or prevention teams in the community tonight, treat them with respect.
