Merthyr Tydfil is one of the four areas affected by the new rules

Four more counties in South Wales will be locked out starting at 18:00 BST on Tuesday.

Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent and Newport will have the same restrictions.

People will not be allowed to enter or leave the areas in question without a reasonable excuse, including work if they cannot do so from home.

Licensed venues like pubs will need to close at 11pm every night, and that rule will extend to Caerphilly as well.

People will only be able to meet other people outside their home in the open air; meetings with people from their extended homes will be prohibited in all four areas.

The new measures affect 431,000 people, putting more than 850,000 in Wales under local lockdown, with restrictions introduced in the county district of Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf in early September.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said he follows the increases in Covid-19 cases in all four counties.

At a press conference, Gething said he will hold “an urgent meeting” on Wednesday with all South Wales councils, health boards and police forces, “from Bridgend to the border with England.”

He will discuss the broader regional situation and whether further coronavirus control measures are needed.

Senior UK government advisers previously warned of a “six-month problem” of increasing cases and potentially 50,000 new deaths.

Gething said it could not “definitely” give a timescale of how long the blocking measures would be necessary.

He said the change of seasons would mean “there will be more people inside” and it would be “more difficult” to do more activity inside.

Mr. Gething added that there is no timetable for “when we will be done with this.”
