The Premier League says 40 players and club staff tested positive for coronavirus in the past week, more than double the previous weekly high.
After pre-testing once a week, the Premier League conducted 2,295 tests in two rounds over the past week.
Between December 28 and 31, there were 28 new positive tests and 12 more between January 1 and 3.
The previous high was 18 positive results from December 21-27.
“With a low number of positive tests in the vast majority of clubs, the league continues to rely on its Covid-19 protocols, fully endorsed by the government, to allow matches to be played as scheduled,” the Premier League said.
The Football Association said there were 15 positive results out of 635 tests conducted in the Women’s Super League and the FA Women’s Championship between December 28 and January 3.
It marks a decrease in the number of positive tests from the previous round, when there were 32 positive results out of 864 tests between December 14 and 20.
Four WSL Manchester City players tested positive as a result of taking a trip to Dubai with the permission of the club.
The latest Premier League results mark an increase in the positive test rate. In the last round, 1.74% of those analyzed were positive.
The 18 positive tests recorded between December 21 and 27 came from 1,479 tests, a rate of 1.22%.
Under Premier League regulations, players and club staff who test positive must self-isolate for 10 days.
Three English top flight matches were canceled last week due to coronavirus outbreaks at individual clubs.
Manchester City’s trip to Everton on December 28 was called off after side Kyle Walker and forward Gabriel Jesus tested positive.
City’s game at Chelsea on Sunday went ahead despite four more members of Pep Guardiola’s team – goalkeeper Ederson, defender Eric Garcia, forward Ferran Torres and midfielder Tommy Doyle – all showing positive results.
Two Fulham away games were also postponed: at Tottenham on December 30 and Burnley on January 3.
Fulham said the games were canceled after a “significant number” of positive cases at the club.
Last Tuesday, Sheffield United said it had recorded “a series” of positive tests, but chose to play at Crystal Palace on Saturday with a small team.
The importance of players sticking to protocols has been highlighted to all 20 Premier League clubs.
