Covid cases have now been confirmed in more than 65 Greater Manchester schools, as parents say it is hidden from them

The number of schools to confirm Covid cases in Greater Manchester has reached more than 65.

At the end of what has been the first full week back for many schools, thousands of students are now isolating themselves after positive cases.

And while many schools have been open and transparent with parents, informing them of any confirmed outbreaks in emails and letters, others only tell parents of children that they need to isolate themselves.

The parents have contacted the Manchester evening news criticize those schools that do not share information between grade groups, saying they should be able to make informed decisions.

The parent of a student at Co-op Academy North Manchester, where a child is in isolation after testing positive, said: “My annoyance is that the school has not officially confirmed by email or letter to parents, so many still they do not know and I have had the option to make decisions.

“For me, transparency is extremely important. It is the minimum we deserve to make informed decisions regarding the well-being of our families and the general public.”

A mother whose son attends Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College in Altrincham says she only learned of one confirmed case in her son’s year 7 bubble because the parents of the boy sent home for isolation felt others had a right to know.

She said: “The children are in a one-year group bubble of almost 300. The case was confirmed Tuesday.

“The school has not yet informed the parents.

“Parents need this information in order to make informed decisions for their children and families.”

John Cornally, director of Blessed Thomas, declined to comment, saying he needed to respect the privacy of the family involved.

A Co-op Academies spokesperson said: “Whenever someone in our academies receives a positive result, we always follow Public Health England’s guidance and advise the right people to isolate themselves. Co-op Academy North Manchester is currently open to all groups of the year.

“We follow all guidance from the government, Public Health England and local authorities when it comes to informing parents or not.

“Regarding the individual case at Co-op Academy North Manchester, we were informed that no student or staff needed to isolate themselves and as such there was no need to inform parents.”
