As fears of a new variant of the coronavirus spread across the world, a growing list of countries is restricting travel with the UK, where it is spreading rapidly.

France has stopped all travel and freight from the UK

EUROPE

  • France: Banned all passenger and freight traffic traveling by air and through the Channel Tunnel from Britain until midnight Tuesday, the most severe restrictions yet.
  • Belgium: Blocked the tunnel and airports from all passenger travel, including transit, for 24 hours starting at 12am on Sunday.
  • Germany: Passenger flights canceled from the UK until December 31.
  • Ireland: Flights banned from the UK for 48 hours, except for Irish residents and passengers bound for Ireland stranded while transiting UK airports.

  • Netherlands: flights banned from Great Britain until at least the new year.
  • Spain: Flights from the United Kingdom are suspended indefinitely as of Tuesday, excluding those carrying Spanish citizens and residents. Border controls with Gibraltar, the British colony on its southwest coast, will also be tightened.
  • Switzerland: Detained foreigners arriving from the UK (and South Africa) and ordered quarantine for people arriving since December 14.

A growing list of European countries have restricted travel

  • Italy: Ground flights to and from Great Britain until January 6, while anyone who has been to Great Britain in the last fortnight is barred from entering.
  • Russia: will suspend air traffic with the United Kingdom for a week from Tuesday.
  • Austria: Passenger flights from Great Britain are not allowed until the new year.
  • Denmark: Incoming British flights suspended until 9am on Wednesday.
  • Sweden: Suspended all inbound travel from Britain and Denmark until further notice.
  • Norway: Inbound flights from Great Britain prohibited from Monday for 48 hours.
  • Croatia: UK snubs canceled for two days starting Sunday night.
  • Bulgaria: banned all flights to and from Great Britain until January 31.
  • Malta: flights stopped in both directions with no end date.
  • Finland: Suspended flights with Great Britain, and national airline Finnair ceased all UK flights for two weeks.
  • Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, North Macedonia: stopping flights from Great Britain indefinitely.

Israel has introduced a 10-day restriction plan

MIDDLE EAST

  • Israel – Flights from Britain were initially banned (along with Denmark and South Africa) and then foreign nationals were banned from entering the country for 10 days starting Monday.
  • Oman: suspended all entry into the country by foreigners and paralyzed international passenger flights, starting Tuesday for a week. Cargo flights are excluded.
  • Saudi Arabia: Halted all international passenger flights and land and sea arrivals for a week or until clearer details emerged on the COVID variant, with freight flights and supply chains exempted.
  • Iran: Suspended flights to the UK for 15 days starting Monday. All Iranian planes ordered to return without passengers.
  • Turkey: banned flights from Great Britain (as well as Denmark, Holland and South Africa) for an unknown period.
  • Jordan: Until January 3, direct and indirect flights from the UK are prohibited.

AFRICA

  • Sudan: Travelers from Britain, the Netherlands and South Africa were banned from Monday until January 5.
  • Tunisia: air links with Great Britain, South Africa and Australia have been suspended, starting this Monday and until further notice. Anyone who has resided or passed through these countries will not be able to access Tunisian territory.

  • United States: The governor of the state of New York intends to stop flights from Great Britain to the state.

  • Chile: direct flights with Great Britain are prohibited, as well as the entry of foreigners who had been in the United Kingdom for two weeks.
