Some variants of Covid-19 may “outperform” vaccines, the government’s main scientific adviser warned.
At a press conference at 10 Downing Street, Sir Patrick Vallance said that certain strains in the future may “bypass” part of the existing immune system.
But it revealed that it was “really quite easy” to adjust vaccines to deal with mutations in the virus.
And the current coups being rolled out in the UK will likely provide enough protection.
He said: “It is possible that variants will outperform vaccines to some extent in the future and some of them that are available in the world now may have a greater effect in bypassing part of the existing immune system that has arrived in response to a vaccine or a previous infection
“I think the vaccine we have now is likely to protect against the UK variant and will also provide protection, I suspect, against the other variants.
“The question is to what extent.”
Sir Patrick Vallance also said that the peak of people entering the hospital will be between the next week and 10 days in most places.

England’s chief medical officer said “we hope” that the peak of infections “has already occurred” in the South East, East and London, where there was an increase in the Kent variant, but that it will be later elsewhere.
“The peak of deaths that I fear is in the future, the peak of hospitalizations in some parts of the country may be for now and begin to fall off the highest,” he said.
“Because people are sticking to the guidelines so well, we think the peaks will come within the next week to 10 days for most places in terms of new people admitted to the hospital.”
