Taiwan has fined a man more than £ 2,600 after he left his hotel room for eight seconds while in quarantine, according to the country’s national news agency.

The Filipino migrant worker left his room at the Kaohsiung hotel where he was quarantined to leave something on the door of a friend who was also in isolation on Saturday.

Hotel staff reported the incident to authorities after capturing it on CCTV, Taiwan’s health department told the Central News Agency.

The migrant worker, who arrived in Taiwan last month, was fined NT $ 100,000 (£ 2,645) shortly after for violating quarantine rules.

There has been a recent increase in imported COVID-19 cases in Taiwan, prompting health authorities to clamp down on offenders.

The city of Kaohsiung has 56 hotels where international visitors are kept in quarantine for 14 days after entering the country.

Anyone violating the quarantine rules can be fined between NT $ 100,000 (£ 2,645) and NT $ 1,000,000 (£ 26,830).

Taiwan has been hailed as a success story during the pandemic, recording 733 confirmed cases and seven deaths.

The country was quick to implement strict border controls and mandatory quarantine for all travelers, and those on the island have proactively worn face masks.
