The leave plan supporting workers temporarily laid off due to the coronavirus crisis will run for a month until the end of April.

It will mean the government will continue to pay 80% of those workers’ wages “giving businesses and employees across the UK certainty in the new year,” the Treasury said.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak also announced that government-backed loan plans designed to support companies affected by the coronavirus crisis would continue until the end of March.

Mr. Sunak said: “Our business and worker support package remains one of the most generous and effective in the world, helping our economy recover and protecting livelihoods across the country.

“We know that premium companies prioritize certainty, so it is right that we allow them to plan ahead regardless of which path the virus takes, so we provide certainty and clarity by extending this support.”

The announcement comes as the Chancellor also revealed that the UK’s next budget would take place on March 3, and that the latest economic forecasts from the Office of Budget Responsibility will be released alongside it.
