Police detained a couple delivering Christmas gifts to their family for violating coronavirus laws.

South Wales police said the couple had traveled from Essex and told officers they were heading to Cardiff to give gifts to relatives.

The force said the couple was “in violation of COVID-19 legislation “, as revealed 110 vehicles were detained in the first 24 hours of random checks in the Welsh capital.

A group of nine people traveling by convoy to visit friends at the university were also turned away by officers, police said.

The force did not say if the couple delivering the gifts faced any punishment.

While there are no restrictions on travel within Wales, people in England are prohibited from crossing the border unless they have a “reasonable excuse”.

This includes traveling for work and “compassionate reasons”, says the Welsh government.

Officers in Cardiff were given powers to stop and fine drivers starting at 9am on Friday in an effort to prevent people from outside Wales from traveling to the city.

It followed concerns that groups of people from blocked areas in the UK, where pubs and bars are closed, helped fill the streets of Cardiff city center last weekend.

Twelve people have received notifications of fixed penalties since the new police powers came into force, and another 15 people received a warning and were ordered to leave Cardiff.

The new powers remain in effect until 5pm on Sunday.

Superintendent Wendy Gunney said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of people who enjoy their weekend cautiously and within the limits of existing regulations, but who do not adhere to the rules continue to put others at greater risk. .

“The measures that exist are in effect for a reason.

“Our checks will continue throughout the weekend, and anyone who blatantly breaks the rules, which have been made very clear, faces a fine.”

England is on lockdown until Wednesday before a tiered system of coronavirus restrictions takes effect.
