Hundreds of thousands of pupils face a delay in returning to many primary schools in England due to high rates of coronavirus.
The government is implement a “contingency framework” in areas with very high rates of virus incidence or transmission, in many London boroughs and throughout the South East.
Children of key workers will still be able to attend and the provision of education for the early years will continue.
The framework says that when primary schools need it, they should use distance education, teaching online.
Elementary school closings will be reviewed on January 13, Boris Johnson has said.
According to Sky News analysis, London schools alone have more than half a million students. Schools in Essex, Kent, and the other counties can have up to 300,000 more.
