Tighter measures are coming in an attempt to control the spread of the coronavirus, the prime minister said.
Boris Johnson said “tough, tough” weeks are ahead in the UK’s fight against COVID-19.
He added: “If you look at the numbers, there is no doubt that we will have to take tougher action and announce them in due course.”
The prime minister said the government “will do everything possible to keep the virus under control” but also added: “I must emphasize at this critical time that it is vital that people stay disciplined.”
Johnson said a large number of people were following the rules and he acknowledged that some were getting frustrated with the continued restrictions.
“I think the public has been fantastic in the way they have tried to follow the lead,” added the prime minister.
Johnson canceled a planned relaxation of COVID-19 rules for much of the country over Christmas, in addition to introducing new Level 4 restrictions.
The measures, similar in many respects to the previous blockades in England, have spread to 75% of the country.
