Two men face life in prison for the murder of a ‘cheeky’ and ‘charming’ 16-year-old after one of his killers was seen on CCTV allegedly carrying the knife used in the fatal ‘zip code war’ attack.

Jaydon James died of a single knife wound after being stabbed in the Wood End area of Coventry.

The teenager had been with friends at a bowling alley when he was chased and fatally stabbed in the middle of an ‘ongoing feud’ between two rival gangs.

Later, detectives found CCTV footage from that night of one of Jaydon’s killers, Frank Kenfack, leaving a car with a hidden object in his jacket.

They believe the object, shown to be hindering Kenfack’s movement, was the knife that was used to stab Jaydon.

Now Kenfack, 18, and his accomplice, Abdi Hussein Abdi, 21, have been found guilty of Jaydon’s murder.

The couple, who are facing life in prison, will be sentenced Wednesday.

During a trial at Warwick Crown Court, jurors heard how Jaydon was attacked in the Wood End area of Coventry in November 2018, while they were with friends.

The group was seen on CCTV on Hillmorton Road prior to the attack.

The court heard that the attackers Abdi and Kenfack had driven into the territory of a rival group in a black Peugeot, before Jaydon was chased into a church driveway.

There he was fatally stabbed. Two of his friends also suffered non-fatal stab wounds.

Opening the case against the two men at the hearing, which began in September, QC prosecutor Michael Burrows said the murder followed a series of incidents involving the RB7 and C2 gangs.

The prosecutor told the court that the C2 gang’s “perceived territory” was the CV2 zip code, which includes Wood End, while the RB7 members came from areas of downtown Coventry and the surrounding area.

Mr. Burrows told the jury: “The rivalry between the two gangs has resulted in a series of incidents of serious violence.”

A few weeks before his death, Jaydon had confided to his mother that he feared RB7 gang members would attack him.

Days later they beat him and stole his coat and mobile phone.

Burrows added: “ Of course Jaydon James is not here to tell us who attacked him the night he was killed, but from what he told his mother, it is clear that he had been attacked and attacked by guys he identified as from RB7. . .

Commenting, West Midlands Police Detective Inspector Stuart Mobberley said: ‘This was a boy, just 11 days after his 16th birthday, whose life was so cruelly taken away.

There are no words she can say to comfort her mother and her family in general, but I hope this conviction can help them come to terms with her death.

“I don’t think Jaydon was attacked that night, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and his killers were just looking for revenge.”

Paul Farrow, a specialized prosecutor at CPS West Midlands, said: ‘I hope this conviction will serve as a deterrent to those considering arming themselves with guns and make them stop and think about the results that can follow.

“Our thoughts are with Jaydon’s family and friends at this time.”

Jaydon’s grandmother described her grandson as a “cheeky charming” who could always “wrap his finger around me.”

Later, police found CCTV footage from that night of one of Jaydon's killers, Frank Kenfack, leaving a car with a hidden object in his jacket.

She added: ‘My grandson had the biggest heart and would do almost anything for anyone who needed help.’

While mourning the loss of her son, known to her friends as JJ and her family as Juie, Jaydon’s mother is also grieving for the life that could have been.

She said: ‘My son couldn’t finish his GCSE or go to the school prom. I will not see my son grow into a man, have a career, grow as a person.

‘I won’t be able to spend special occasions with him that all parents take for granted, those iconic and special birthdays from 18 to 21.

“My son will not bring the girl he has decided to marry home to me, I will not see him become a father.”

Kenfack, 18, homeless, and Abdi, 21, of Foleshill Road, Coventry, will be sentenced Wednesday after being convicted of murder and injury.

A third defendant, Bongani Ngozi, 18, was acquitted of murder and injury.

The test was a second test, after the original test was abandoned due to the March 19 Covid-19 lockdown.
