Could Diego Llorente’s debut in Leeds come earlier than expected?

Leeds United have taken another injury blow, and the club confirmed on its official website Tuesday that Kalvin Phillips could be out for up to six weeks.

Phillips joins a handful of teammates already offside due to injury. Liam Cooper retired from the starting lineup in the warm-up leading up to Monday’s clash with the Wolves.

Meanwhile, Adam Forshaw has been out of action for over a year.

Losing Phillips is potentially a huge blow for Leeds. Marcelo Bielsa has several options that he could turn to in the coming weeks. But it seems fair to say that replacing Phillips is the most difficult thing that could be for the white manager.

It will not be easy for Bielsa. But perhaps losing Phillips could open the door for a teammate to get a little closer to making his Leeds debut.

Another player currently on the sidelines is the summer signing of Diego Llorente. Llorente was an unused substitute against Manchester City before the international break. However, he suffered a groin injury while away with Spain.

According to the club’s official website at the time, the 27-year-old was supposed to be out for up to three weeks.

Llorente returns while Phillips is still out

It has been a little over a week since that update. So Llorente still has a little less than fifteen days on the sidelines, as long as he does not suffer setbacks.

But when he returns, he will surely be in line to move almost immediately to the starting lineup.

He can play as a containment midfielder, so he can join the contenders to replace Phillips. But he could also get into his more natural center-back position, allowing Robin Koch to advance if necessary.

Previously, he seemed willing to face one more wait to side with Cooper and Koch forming a promising partnership and Phillips impressing at the top flight.

But Phillips will now be out for several weeks after Llorente’s return. Therefore, it is surely fair to suggest that Leeds will have no choice but to hand over their debut at the next available opportunity.
