Marina Ericson, Temporary Chief Superintendent for the Suffolk Police, said Mr. McKeague is believed to have died after climbing into a Greggs dumpster that was dumped into a Biffa garbage truck.

He added that he had originally driven to the area to meet colleagues from the RAF on the night of September 23.

“Witnesses claim that Corrie consumed so much alcohol during the night that she got very drunk and was asked to leave the Flex nightclub,” added Ms. Ericson.

“Witnesses also described him as happy and friendly throughout the night.”

McKeague, who was from Dunfermline, Fife, was last seen alive in CCTV footage at 3.25am, where he entered a horseshoe-shaped area on Brentgovel Street.

This area is located behind a Superdrug and Greggs store and contains several industrial garbage containers.

Ericson said the industrial containers had been collected at 4:19 a.m. the same morning.

At the time, the Greggs container weighed 116 kg (18 ° 3 pounds), “this was about 70 to 80 kg (12 ° 8 pounds) more than its average weight,” he said.

“Corrie’s mobile phone, having connected to the Internet, provided a signal from this point that mapped the garbage truck’s movements to the Barton Mills roundabout.

“At that point, the mobile service provider lost the signal.”

Ms Ericson added: “Despite an extensive police-led investigation and search, there has been no evidence of life since Corrie’s last sighting at 3.25am on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

The coroner said, “Based on the evidence I have heard, I will open an investigation into Corrie’s tragic death.”

The hearing, which was held in Ipswich, was opened and adjourned on Friday and a pre-investigation review hearing is scheduled for February 5.

McKeague’s mother, Nicola Urquhart, who previously requested an investigation for her son, said she is “extremely hopeful that this will give us answers.”

His father, Martin McKeague, added: “This will reveal the truth to the public.

“There is no mystery. We are not discovering any new news here.

“The facts and the evidence that they have presented to us tell us that this is what happened to him.”
