Figures show that 21 percent of all deaths in England and Wales to date, 6,235, were caused by the killer bug.
In the week to April 3, the total number of people who died, including non-Covid-19-related deaths, was more than 16,387, a new record.
That bleak figure is 6,000 more than normal at this time of year when deaths tend to drop because there is less flu than in winter.
DEATH STATISTICS
Among the latest deaths is a 65-year-old nurse who contracted the disease while treating patients with only a paper mask, plastic gloves, and a penny.
Gareth Roberts, 65, had emerged from retirement and was working additional shifts before dying at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, last weekend.
At least 40 frontline NHS employees have so far died of Covid-19 in the UK.
KILL OUR HEROES
Another victim is nursery worker Katie Horne, 21, who died after contracting coronavirus while waiting for a liver transplant.
Katie, from Burgess Hill, West Sussex, was admitted to the hospital about four weeks ago with a severe liver condition before testing positive for the deadly virus.
Today, it was learned that “wonderful” nurse Leilana Medel became the last health worker to die of coronavirus, at just 41 years old.
Friends of the nurse, who lived in Bridgend, South Wales, said her husband, Johnny Medel Jr, had also tested positive for Covid-19 and was battling the virus in intensive care.
Earlier this month, Dr. Anton Sebastianpillai, a geriatric consultant, died of coronavirus at age 75 at Kingston Hospital and was cared for in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
NHS figures also reveal that England’s deadliest day was April 8, when 750 people lost their lives in the hospital in 24 hours.
London deaths from coronavirus have now topped 3,000, almost tripling the number compared to this time last week.
Today in Scotland, another 40 people have died, bringing the total death toll to 615, while Wales has suffered another 19 deaths, for a total of 403.
And in Northern Ireland, ten more people have died, with a total of 134 dead.
12,107 tests were performed starting at 9 a.m. this morning, less than yesterday’s number of 14,506.
If the trend for deaths outside the hospital continues, the actual number of deaths in the UK today could be more than 13,000.
