The UK has reported 6,178 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily total in four months.

Since the start of the pandemic, only two days have passed that have exceeded this total: on May 1, when there were 6,201 confirmed cases, and on April 5, when there were 6,199.

Sky science correspondent Thomas Moore said: “Much larger tests are detecting more cases now than in the spring, but the increase will underscore the urgency of taking action to stop a second wave.”

The UK positivity rate, the ratio of positive tests to the number of tests overall, is now 2.51%, compared to less than 1% for most of July and early August.

This is close to the World Health Organization recommended level of less than 5% and suggests that the number of infections is growing.

The country reported 4,926 daily confirmed cases on Tuesday.

Another 37 people died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 through Wednesday, bringing the total death toll in the UK to 41,862.
