A further 7,108 coronavirus cases and 71 deaths have been recorded in the UK, according to the latest daily figures.
The figure is 35 less than yesterday, which was more since the pandemic started at 7.143.
The deaths on Wednesday are the same as yesterday and bring the total number to 42,143.
The vast majority of new cases and deaths still occur in England: 5,656 and 62; with Northern Ireland registering 424 and 1, and Wales 388 and 1.
Seven of the deaths occurred in Scotland, the highest since June 17, and had 640 new cases, up from 806 the day before.
In a weekly comparison, cases in the UK are 15% higher than the 6,178 recorded last Wednesday, but deaths have almost doubled from 37.
The death toll records people who died within 28 days of their first positive test. However, COVID-19 may not necessarily be the actual cause of death in all cases.
Reported infections in the UK are still much lower than the peak of the pandemic in the spring, when some experts suggest there were around 100,000 new cases each day.
Of course, a much broader testing regimen is likely to detect more cases, yet the proportion of all tests that are positive, an important measure, has also increased.
