Another 413 people with coronavirus have died across the UK in the last 24-hour period, 58 more than the number reported on Friday, government figures show.
The number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 it has also risen, to 24,957. It’s an increase of 1,670 over Friday’s figure of 23,287.
In England, 283 deaths have been announced, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in the country’s hospitals to 34,374.
In Wales, another 958 cases of coronavirus have been recorded, and the number of deaths increased by 32, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 2014.
On Friday, it became known that the UK coronavirus reproduction number (R) it had stayed between 1.1 and 1.3, the same as the week before, government scientists said.
The R number is used to determine how fast coronavirus it is spreading, representing the average number of people each person with the disease infects.
The latest figures are presented as The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) warned it was too late to find the nurses needed to meet the demands of an “extremely challenging” winter with 40,000 vacancies in England alone.
The union now asked the government to “be honest” about the risks that understaffing could pose to patient safety.
It comes after NHS England moved its highest alert level deal with COVID-19 cases after the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals increased to more than 11,000.
