Captain Sir Tom Moore has asked the country to stand “shoulder to shoulder” as England enter a second block.
The veteran of World War II, who was gentleman after raising more than £ 32 million for the NHS walking 100 laps around his garden before his 100th birthday, he said the nation should come together to get through the next month.
Non-essential pubs, bars, restaurants and shops will be closed across England until December 2nd – and people are asked to stay home.
Captain Sir Tom said: “I wish we all stood shoulder to shoulder, metaphorically!
“Let’s try not to get discouraged, we will get out of this, whatever is thrown at us and together we can make sure that tomorrow will be a good day.”
His charity, The Captain Tom Foundation, has launched a campaign called Walk and Talk with Captain Tom.
His goal is to get as many people as possible to walk and talk, spreading hope and alleviating loneliness.
Sir tom has spent this week talking to lonely people on the phone. He also continues to walk every day with his family.
His daughter Hannah said that her father “became a beacon of hope, and not only here but throughout the world for all those who are suffering the aftermath of this terrible virus.”
She added: “Let’s pick up the phone, let’s greet someone through the window, let’s talk, let’s try to fight the loneliness in this confinement and walk.
“My father can’t take up the mantle again, but what he can do is lead the charge and take us on the next walk and let’s walk as a nation.
“Imagine what we can achieve as a nation if we walk and talk to people at the same time, even with the regulations of only walking with each other.”
