Portugal will no longer be included in the quarantine list in England today.
There was wide speculation that it would do so after the number of COVID-19 cases in Portugal it increased to 23 per 100,000 people in the seven days through Wednesday, up from 15.3 the previous week.
The UK government generally says that countries where the figure is above 20 per 100,000 are at risk of being added to the list.
Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps tweeted: “We continue to constantly review the Travel Corridor listing and will not hesitate to remove countries if necessary. However, there are no English additions or removals today. Tourists are, however, reminded: 14-day quarantine countries can change on very short notice. “
Tourists in Portugal were struggling to get home this week.
British Airways’ flight prices rose to more than £ 500 by Thursday and EasyJet sold out all its flights from Faro to UK airports on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Portugal was originally left off the list of so-called “travel corridors” from which people could get to without self-quarantine when the policy was introduced in June.
It was only added to the safe list a few weeks ago, on August 22.
