Portugal is being added to England’s quarantine list, which means that any traveler arriving after 4 a.m. on Saturday will have to isolate themselves for two weeks.
The restriction will not apply to travelers returning from Madeira and the Azores.
Hungary, French Polynesia and Reunion have also been added to the list of countries from which travelers to England will have to self-quarantine.
However, those arriving in England from Sweden will no longer need to isolate themselves.
It comes a week after the government made no changes to the so-called “travel corridors” – but both Wales and Scotland took different approaches, causing the anger and confusion of some tourists.
Last Thursday Wales added Portugal to its quarantine list, but excluded the Azores and Madeira islands, while Scotland took a general approach to the entire country.
Some tourists expected England to do the same, cutting short breaks and shelling out hundreds of pounds for the first flights home, given the coronavirus the infection rate reached 23 per 100,000 people.
Ministers say countries where the figure is above 20 per 100,000 are at risk of being added to the list, but earlier this week. the UK exceeded that threshold.
The biggest restrictions from the first COVID-19 the lockdown has been announced in response, significantly reduce the maximum number of people who can legally meet.
Changes have also been made to England’s quarantine system, so islands can now be treated separately from entire countries.
Secretary of Transportation Grant Shapps made the announcement on monday, and at the same time added to the quarantine list seven Greek islands popular with British sun seekers.
