More than one coronavirus vaccine will be available in the first quarter of 2021, a government scientific adviser told Sky News.
Sir Jeremy Farrar, who is on the SAGE committee, said: “I think in the first quarter of next year we will have vaccines, we will have more than one vaccine.”
Speaking at Sophy Ridge on Sunday, he added: “The UK is in an extraordinarily strong position – the vaccine task force chaired by Kate Bingham has done an absolutely extraordinary job.
“Britain has access to a number of different vaccines through a variety of different approaches.
“Vaccines come in all different styles and approaches and Britain has a portfolio of vaccines, through which I am sure it will reach more than one in the first quarter of next year.”
Sir Jeremy was also optimistic about effective treatments, saying “they could come before vaccines.”
He said: “We know about dexamethasone from the brilliant RECOVERY trial in the UK.
“And now we know that the so-called monoclonal antibodies are coming, which will attack the virus and prevent patients from getting worse.”
