More than 1,000 students and staff from two universities have been forced into isolation after testing positive for coronavirus.
Some 433 people from the University of Nottingham I hired the virus, with 588 people at the University of Sheffield also testing positive.
It comes after students from across the country traveled to cities to start a new college term amid new coronavirus restrictions.

Manchester’s two main universities, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, have also suspended all classroom teaching for the remainder of October.
Some courses that are based on practical training will be exempted, the Manchester Evening News said.
The University of Nottingham is running its own testing program on its campuses and attributes its large number of cases to that scheme.
He said 106 students in college hallways had tested positive, with 93 in other purpose-built housing. Some 226 students living in private accommodation have contracted the virus, while eight staff members are also included in the data.
There are 35,000 students and 10,000 employees at the Midlands institution.
Nottingham officials have told local media that they are concerned about a significant increase in cases in the city and are working with Public Health England (PHE) to suppress the spread.
At the University of Sheffield, as of Monday, 583 students tested positive for COVID-19, as did six staff members.
The university said that when notified of confirmed cases, it uses time data to identify close contacts and encourages them to self-isolate.

Those in quarantine are supported by the university and receive regular wellness checks and help with food delivery.
The university is home to 29,000 students and around 8,000 staff members.
Sheffield’s infection rate has soared to 286.6 in recent days as a result of the sharp increase in cases.
Some 283 students and 35 staff members at a Cardiff school have also been told to isolate themselves after 11 of them tested positive.

The principal of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr told parents in a letter that at least two students and three staff members were among those with the virus.
The school is reducing the size of its contact bubbles and strengthening infection control over the next several weeks.
