The New Year’s Eve fireworks display in London will not continue due to the coronavirus pandemic, Sadiq Khan said.
The city’s mayor said the annual event will not be held this year because “we simply cannot afford” for people to gather as they normally would.
Speaking on LBC Radio, Khan said: “I can tell you that this year there will not be a fireworks New Year’s Eve like in previous years.
“We simply cannot afford the number of people to congregate on New Year’s Eve.”
The mayor added: “What we are working on is making something that people can enjoy in the comfort and safety of their living rooms on television.”
Khan said exact details of what would happen on December 31 have not been finalized.
He said: “As soon as we hit rock bottom, I’ll let Londoners know and people across the country.
“We cannot afford to lose that space because New Year’s Eve is a great opportunity for the rest of the world to see how wonderful our city is.
“Especially during a recession, we need to keep investing in our city and in the people who come to London.”
It was reported that more than 100,000 tickets were sold for last year’s exhibition, and many more people lined the streets of the capital to watch.
The mayor said there would be no exhibition in London to prevent people from gathering.
“Nothing will happen in the city,” Khan said.
“So the key to avoid will be a reason for people to come to town.”
