Tighter restrictions on home visiting have been extended to Lanarkshire.
People living in the area will not be able to meet other households in the interior from midnight on Friday.
Similar measures already exist in Glasgow, East and West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.
The extension to the north and south of Lanarkshire means that the restrictions now cover more than 1.75 million people in the west of Scotland.
Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon had previously said that the number of new cases in the region was “causing some concern.”
Test and Protect in Lanarkshire has identified a total of 205 positive cases of Covid-19 last week.
Sturgeon said: “It is clearly regrettable that these restrictions should be extended to people living in Lanarkshire.
“I understand that this will not be good news for the people living in these areas, especially before the weekend, but we must act now to protect people and have more control over the virus in the area.”
The restrictions will be reviewed next Friday, while those affecting the other five areas of the council will be reviewed on Monday.
More than 1.1 million people in the west of Scotland were already covered by the home visiting restrictions. North and South Lanarkshire have a combined population of over 661,000 people.
On Thursday, Sturgeon announced a reduction in the number of people who could meet, either indoors or outdoors, in Scotland.
No more than six people from two different households are allowed to meet, although children under 12 do not count towards the total.
Sturgeon said in his daily briefing on Friday that he had sought advice on whether it would be possible to allow children from more than two households to gather together in some circumstances, for example at birthday parties.
He said he hoped this could be cleared up in the next few days.
The planned opening of theaters, live music venues and indoor soft-play centers, which was scheduled for next Monday, was also delayed until at least October 5.
