Covid restrictions may not end in England once the lockdown ends on December 2, which means that any kind of normal Christmas has been called into question.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) has published models and data suggesting that measures will need to be implemented throughout December.

That would mean the restrictions would remain through the Christmas period despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisting that the holiday season would be “as normal as possible.”

With no restrictions after December 2, Sage warns that the virus could spread widely.

And they warn that the tiered system may not be enough to reduce infections, so strict measures are required.

What they are remains to be seen, but it would likely mean curbing the household mix.

The report said: “The longer-term perspective depends so much on the nature of [restrictions] which are implemented in England after December 2 and policies during the festive period.

“If England returns to the same tier system application before November 5, the broadcast will return at the same rate of increase as today.”

The news comes as Hull faces the biggest health crisis in a generation as the coronavirus takes hold of the city more and more.

As cases rise and hospital beds fill, people are urged to stay home as Hull appears poised to continue to top the table for the worst infection rate in the country.

The city is currently recovering from its deadliest week yet with 31 deaths in seven days along with a large spike in coronavirus cases during the second national shutdown. Read more.

On Saturday, five more people died in Hull hospitals after contracting coronavirus, three died on Wednesday and one more on Thursday. The death toll for Hull and East Yorkshire is now 279.

Health bosses are labeling ‘a public health crisis’ in which daily death rates are constantly getting high.

On Saturday, public health figures show that Hull has seen a daily increase in coronavirus cases of 296 and an infection rate of 3,019.5 per 100,000 residents.

In the East Riding there was an increase in the last 24 hours of 243 cases and it has an infection rate of 2,339.3.
