Heathrow boss calls for an end to general quarantine rules

John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow’s chief executive, tells Sky News’s Kay Burley that the government must step in to help the aviation industry.

“Unless something changes, we will see airports and airlines go bankrupt in the coming months,” he says.

“The government can fix this by changing the rules so that if you test negative for COVID, you can come out of quarantine early.

“That will only eliminate part of the risk that passengers have when leaving, of not knowing if they will have to quarantine themselves when they return from their visit, but it will also make it easier for visitors to come to this country to spend their money, because they will not have to put themselves in quarantine for 14 days, which would cover the entire duration of his own vacation. “

Grant Shapps had previously told to Sky News that testing at airports would not be a “silver bullet” ending the need for quarantine, and the prime minister said such tests only identified 7% of coronavirus cases.

But Holland-Kaye said the tests at the airport could be followed by a shorter quarantine period of five days, after which each passenger would take another test.

He continued: “Many other countries, such as Germany and France, have been testing as an alternative to quarantine, and their aviation markets, although not back to normal, are much healthier than ours.”
