The growth of coronavirus infections may be slowing, early results from England’s largest COVID-19 study suggest.
Research by Imperial College London and Ipsos Mori showed the R number, a key indicator showing the coronavirus reproduction rate, fell from 1.7 to 1.1 since the beginning of the month.
The study director says this could mean that efforts like the “rule of six” and local closures can be effective in slowing down the virus, but he also noted that the prevalence of the infection remains “the highest we’ve ever recorded. the date”.
The figures showed that around one in 200 people was infected with the coronavirus.
Professor Paul Elliot said: “While our latest findings show some early evidence that the growth of new cases may have slowed, suggesting that efforts to control infection are working, the prevalence of infection is the highest it has been. we have registered to date.
“This reinforces the need for protective measures to limit the spread of the disease and public adherence to these, which will be vital to minimizing more major illnesses and loss of life from COVID-19.”
The most recent data was taken from tests with 80,000 volunteers between September 18 and 26 and compared with a previous analysis from August 24 to September 7.
It comes after the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance warned the country Wednesday night “we don’t have this under control at the moment.”
Boris Johnson warned that to prevent the country from returning to a national lockdown was for everyone to “follow the lead.”
the latest figures from the government’s scientific advisory council, SAGE placed the R number between 1.2 and 1.5 as of an announcement on September 25.
SAGE updates its number every Friday.
The Imperial study also revealed that one in 100 people between the ages of 18 and 24 was infected, and that age range has the highest rate of any group.
It occurs when at least 45 universities reported they had COVID-19 cases, according to Sky News analysis.
The full Imperial and Ipsos Mori study will be published next week.
