The number of new positive coronavirus cases in Wales has increased again with dozens of new cases in RCT, but a decrease in the number of new cases in Caerphilly closed.

Public Health Wales (PHW) has said that 110 new laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus were reported on Tuesday 15 September.

Tuesday’s confirmed cases came after PHW reported 183 new cases on Monday, which was the largest increase so far this month and the largest daily change since June.

The nation’s weekly rate of infections is now 21.4 per 100,000 people, beyond the rate at which a quarantine would be imposed in a foreign country.

Caerphilly remains the area of Wales with the most cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days at 82.8.

There are high numbers per 100,000 for RCT (68.4) and the rate in Merthyr is now 29.8 compared to 39.8 on Monday. People living in Merthyr and RCT have been subject to additional voluntary restrictions since last week after both cases saw both cases rise to an incidence rate of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants, which was the level at which a local lockdown was introduced in Caerphilly. Attention has also turned to Newport, which had 46.5 cases per 100,000 on Tuesday.

Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething will present a Winter Protection Plan for the NHS on Tuesday, which will include increasing bed capacity over the next few months and changing the way services are delivered. You can follow their announcement here.

On Monday, Gething said that the pattern of rising coronavirus cases in Wales was similar to that seen in February, but that we have “a matter of weeks” to change our behavior and reduce cases. Summarize everything you said in the last Welsh Government coronavirus briefing here.

Tuesday’s figure brings the total number of cases to 19,681 in Wales since the start of the pandemic.
