More thoughts from our readers on Scotland’s new five-tier lockdown system …

Joe MacReany: “It will work if everyone follows the guidelines! During the lockdown, Scotland went 19 consecutive days with no new cases and almost eradicated the virus. Until Boris opened up while Scotland and Wales were still confined! So yes, you can eradicate the virus. Stay safe awbudy “

There is still a lot of time for you to say: go on, you know what you want!

SUMMARY: Coronavirus in Scotland: 18 new deaths recorded as the country sees 1,401 new cases in the last 24 hours

R number in the UK still above 1

The reproduction number, or R-value, of transmission of the coronavirus in the UK is still greater than 1.

Data released Friday by the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) show that the R estimate for the whole of the UK is between 1.2 and 1.4.

Last week, the R number was between 1.3 and 1.5.

R represents the average number of people each person infects with Covid-19.

When the number is greater than 1, a sprout can grow exponentially.

An R number between 1.2 and 1.4 means that, on average, every 10 infected people will infect between 12 and 14 more people.

A few more thoughts from our readers on Scotland’s new five-level lockdown system …

Alison M Fraser Smith: “Poor labeling of levels. These will give false security impressions.

“So level 1 calls us level 0. That implies that we are all fine. There are no restrictions. Level 5 is called Level 4. This suggests that the worst is yet to come. CONFUSED and DECEPTIVE.”

Andy Littlejohn: “Great job, it’s about protecting the NHS and saving lives! Now it just depends on the general public sticking to what is being asked of us !!!”

Some reflections from our health correspondent …

We asked you to give your opinion on Scotland’s new five-tier lock system, and you did.

Jay Muirhead Campbell said: “I like the system, they seem to have it quite simple and with a focus on support for the most vulnerable and are supporting businesses above the UK support scheme.”

But Sean Wichman said, “I should do it at level 75. That will become clearer.”

Christmas is not canceled … in the south

Are you paying attention, Mr. Leitch?

People may be able to celebrate Christmas “as a family” this year, Downing Street has said.

A spokesperson for Number 10 said at a Westminster briefing: “The Prime Minister has previously made clear that he is hopeful that, in many ways, we can return some aspects of our lives to normal by Christmas.

“As I say, we have had a clear ambition to ensure that people can celebrate Christmas as a family this year.”

ONS: 0.57% of people in private homes had Covid-19 in the two weeks from October 3 to 16

In Scotland, an estimated 0.57% of people in private households had Covid-19 in the two weeks from October 3-16, or about one in 180 people, the ONS said.

It is the first time that the ONS has published an estimate of the number of people who test positive for the virus in Scotland.

But he said it was too early to comment on any trends in the proportion of the population testing positive, and because of the small amount of testing within the survey sample, the results should be interpreted with caution.

The analysis is based on the results of the swab test of 4,639 participants, with 24 people from 20 households testing positive.

How will Scotland’s new five-level lockdown system work?

The new system explained:

Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Level 0 will see most businesses open and eight people from three households will be able to gather inside.

This is limited to six people from two households in Level 2, while other measures would be close to those observed across the country in September.

Level 2 was described as similar to those seen in Scotland at this time outside the central belt, including the limits of hospitality.

Sturgeon said Level 3 would see “stricter restrictions” like those now in Glasgow and Edinburgh, including pub closures, although restaurants may open in some circumstances.

The highest level, level 4, was described as closest to a total lockdown seen in March, including the closure of non-essential stores. Six people from two households will be able to meet outdoors.
