The maximum number of people who can legally meet in a home in England will be reduced to try to stop another coronavirus spike, Sky News understands.

A government source said the figure will drop from 30, but the new figure is still being worked out.

A strong rally follows in COVID-19 infections, with 2,948 reported on Monday, the highest number since May 22.

Experts warn that the comparison should be treated with caution because twice as many tests are being done now than then.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, England’s deputy chief medical officer, intervened yesterday to warn cases are increasing because people have “relaxed too much”.

Fears also rise ahead of the new college year that begins this month and next, with students preparing to travel across the country.

Robert Jenrick, the housing secretary, told Sky News that students should “exercise a certain degree of caution … particularly when they go home and see their elderly relatives.”

He added that young people should use an “extra degree of common sense this fall.”
