City of London and Westminster diners got a whopping 849,000 meals in the government’s Eat Out to Help Out plan last month.
This was by far the highest number anywhere in the UK under the initiative, which was deemed an overwhelming success after it encouraged many people to return to restaurants after the coronavirus emergency shutdown.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak said that anyone eating at a participating establishment Monday through Wednesday during the month of August could get a 50% state-funded discount on food and soft drinks up to a maximum of £ 10, with restaurants claiming the money to the government.
Now it’s over, official figures have been released showing the total number of registered restaurants, the total number of meals claimed, the total amount of discount claimed and the average discount per meal in pounds and cents in each UK parliamentary constituency.
Bristol North West had the highest food claims (3,245) per restaurant, followed by Filton and Bradley Stoke in South Gloucestershire (2,615), Birmingham Hodge Hill (2,500), Harlow in Essex (2,369) and Corby in Northamptonshire (2,217).
Birmingham Hall Green had the most money claimed by each restaurant, at £ 14,206 on average. Llanelli in Carmarthenshire was next at £ 13,946, followed by Birmingham Hodge Hill (£ 12,879), East Londonderry in Northern Ireland (£ 12,547) and Bradford East (£ 11,689).
This indicates that the plan has had a better impact in these areas, as customers tend to spend more on average and restaurants recover more cash from the government.
People from Rayleigh and Wickford in Essex had the highest discount of all constituencies – an average savings of £ 8.22 per meal, while the lowest was in Liverpool Walton at £ 2.80. The UK average was about £ 6.
Of the home nations, the scheme appears to have been most popular in Northern Ireland, recording the highest number of meals and the total amount of discount claimed per restaurant. Some 1,263 claimed meals per restaurant and £ 7,316 per restaurant.
In the English regions, the popularity of the scheme has been greatest in the West Midlands, North West and South West, with an average of more than 1,000 claimed meals per restaurant and more than £ 5,800 per restaurant.
In London, diners claimed an average of 755 meals per restaurant.
Residents of the City of London and Westminster, the area with the highest number of participating restaurants (1,498), enjoyed a total discount of £ 6,058,000.
The second highest number of meals eaten was Manchester Central, where they got 614,000 as part of the plan.
In northeast Glasgow 559,000 meals were consumed, while in Glasgow Central people consumed 554,000.
The next highest was Liverpool Riverside with 436,000 meals, followed by Edinburgh South West (416,000) and Birmingham Ladywood, where people popped in at 402,000.
In Northern Ireland, Belfast South had the most meals on the plan at 374,000.
As of August 27, the total number of meals claimed in the UK was 114,156,000, representing a total discount of £ 659,391,000 at 127,625 restaurants.
Independent companies and larger chains were among the establishments that participated, and some have said they will continue to offer price reduction despite the government discarding extend schema beyond its end date of August 31.
