Boris Johnson’s father has said he is “extremely sorry” after he was photographed shopping without covering his face.
Stanley Johnson was photographed in the Daily Mirror newspaper at a newsstand in west London on Tuesday, appearing to be breaking the rules by not covering his mouth and nose.
It comes after fines increased to £ 200 last week for first-time offenders who do not cover their face according to government guidelines.
Speaking to the newspaper, Johnson said he may not be “100% up to date” with the current rules as he had just returned to England after three weeks abroad.
“I am so sorry for the slip and I absolutely urge everyone to do everything possible to make sure they follow the rules on masks and social distancing.”
“I’m sure the fact that this was my first day back in the UK after three weeks abroad is not an excuse for not knowing the rules.”
During the Downing Street press conference on Wednesday, Prime Minister urged the public to follow coronavirus guidelines.
“You have to keep in mind that the fines are now very considerable and will be imposed,” he said.
Face coverings are mandatory in stores and public transportation since July 24, and last week the government’s guidance was extended to hospitality venues, theaters, restaurants, bars and pubs, unless people need to remove them to eat or drink.
This is not the first time Stanley Johnson has made headlines.
In July he defended his decision to travel to Greece in an apparent violation of the Foreign Ministry’s guidance to avoid nonessential travel.
And he admitted to having violated the rules of the confinement when he went out to buy a newspaper after the birth of his grandson in April, stating that “he was not sure that it is an essential trip”, and also indicated in March that he would ignore the advice of the Government and go to the pub.
