Boris Johnson will make a statement on South Yorkshire today, amid speculation that the region could receive the toughest coronavirus restrictions from England.
Speaking to Kay Burley of Sky News, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick did not rule out the area moving to Level 3 and revealed that discussions have been held on the issue.
He said: “It is not correct for me to anticipate a full statement that the prime minister and [Sheffield city region mayor] Dan Jarvis will do it later today.
“But we have had very successful conversations with him and with the leaders in South Yorkshire.
“Again there is a serious situation there and they rightly wanted to act.
“We have discussed that over the course of yesterday and early this morning and an announcement will be made shortly.”
Jenrick also denied that relations with some mayors were breaking down, after talks collapsed yesterday over financial support for Greater Manchester.
He said he had “very productive” conversations with Jarvis this week, adding: “I hope those discussions come to a conclusion this morning.”
