Control area in Herefordshire after the avian flu outbreak

A CONTROL zone has been implemented in North Herefordshire following a suspected outbreak of bird flu.

To reduce the risk of transmission of avian influenza (avian flu), the Secretary of State has declared a temporary control zone in the areas surrounding the property.

Hereford Times:

The government-enforced zone of control has radii of three kilometers from the center near the King’s Pyon area in North Herefordshire.

The control zone includes Leominster, Wellington, Bodenham, Weobley and Eardisland.

The measures apply from 12:30 pm on November 11, until this declaration is withdrawn or “modified by another declaration.”

Those who own farms in the area must keep a record of: visitors; poultry; Movements of birds and eggs.

Also poultry should be isolated and no person should move poultry, other captive birds or mammals.

Nor should there be any release of game birds in the area.

No person may move poultry, eggs, poultry meat or carcasses into or out of the area unless the movement is direct and authorized by a veterinary inspector.

Poultry and eggs can be transported through the area on a main road or rail if no stops are made within the area.

If you suspect any type of avian flu in poultry or captive birds you should report it immediately by calling the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200301.

If you find any dead wild water flow (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as seagulls or raptors, you should report it to the Defra helpline at 03459 335577.
