Perhaps we should call this new variant of Covid-19 the “Grinch strain”. As the coronavirus in a mutated and more contagious form ruins plans for holiday gatherings, the covers can do little to hang a bauble in the news. You could at least buy a copy of all of today’s newspapers to keep you busy during the times of pent-up joy ahead. Puzzle specials, bonus sections, and other extras abound in these latest Sunday Before Christmas issues …
the Mail he asks, “Will this nightmare ever end?” adding that Christmas plans have been “smashed for 16 minutes” and emphasizing that the prime minister “faces the wrath of conservatives” over the decision.
the Mirror blames it squarely at the feet of the prime minister with a combination of “Lost Christmas”, “Boris U-turns once more” and “Public fury at last-gasp change of mind,” while acknowledging that “super Covid tension threatens to devastate the country ”.
the Observer it has “Johnson U-turn Ruins the Nation’s Christmas Plans” and a hint from its comment section: “The Right Decision – Made at the Wrong Time and the Wrong Way.” There’s a splash of color with the special inside puzzles promoted above the headboard.
the sunday time it also lights things up with a promo for its “Block TV and Broadcast Guide”, but there’s no escaping the story of the day: “Christmas is canceled due to the rise of the mutant virus.” His political editor, Tim Shipman, reevaluates Boris Johnson: “Cavalier PM is now a sad and sober Roundhead” (Wikipedia is your friend here).
the Sunday Telegraph It has the same image of Johnson and the headline “Christmas canceled for millions.”
From Scotland, the Herald gives us: “As the new variant of Covid spreads … The bubble bursts at Christmas gatherings.”
the Quick has “fast-spreading Covid-19 destroys Christmas” attributing it to the “scary new strain of virus.”
