A teenager who verbally abused Professor Chris Whitty on the street had his PlayStation confiscated by his mother as punishment, it was reported.
The boy’s behavior was widely condemned after a video surfaced showing him repeatedly accusing England’s medical director of lying about the pandemic.
While Whitty was buying lunch from a Mexican food stand on a central London street, the 15-year-old is heard telling Whitty, “You are a liar. You lie about Covid-19 cases … stop lying to television, man. “
The teenager, who has not been identified, filmed himself making the false claims about Whitty and shared the video on TikTok. The video was later posted on Twitter by Conservative MP Matt Vickers, who described the boy’s behavior as “shocking.”
Now his mother, 47, has joined the conviction and told the boy to record another video apologizing to Whitty, according to an interview on Mail Online. She quotes her saying, “I was horrified when I saw how rude my son was to Mr. Whitty. This is not how I have raised him and it is not the behavior I expect of him. “
And he explained how he had punished the boy saying: “I have taken his PlayStation, which is what he loves the most. I have not punished him because he is already suffering enough from the confinement and he does not go out as much as he used to ”.
Whitty was more forgiving. When asked about the incident at Wednesday’s Downing Street briefing, he said the “young lad” appeared to be “showing off.”
He added: “Frankly, I didn’t think anything about it, I was very surprised that the media took it as something important. “I am confident that he will become a model citizen in due course and hopefully more like Captain Tom, who was the kind of person that I think exemplified much more the spirit of the UK.”
The boy’s mother suggested that the video of her son was a sign of the impact on the mental health of the young people during the confinement. She said: “I was trying to get a message across to Mr. Whitty and make him understand what he and other young people are going through, but I am very upset and angry with him for how he did it.”
She told Mail Online, “He’s actually quite a smart kid.”
