Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has rejected suggestions that a new goalkeeper would automatically become No. 1 at Stamford Bridge this season and says he is “happy” with Kepa.
The Spaniard was sacked last season after a series of regrettable performances and Chelsea are eager to hear offers for the 25-year-old, who joined the club for £ 71 million in 2018.
Chelsea are closing in on a £ 18 million move for Rennes stopper Edouard Mendy, and it was assumed that the Senegal international would become the first choice.
Kepa was in goal when Chelsea kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win at Brighton, but questions were raised about the Spaniard after replays showed that he should have done better with Leandro Trossard’s goal.
However, after insisting that there has been no word on a deal for the 28-year-old, Lampard suggested that he was indeed happy to stick with Kepa.
When asked about the progress in the club’s search for a new goalkeeper, Lampard said: ‘Not at the moment, no. Obviously, there are a few weeks until the end of the window.
“We have a great team now, so we have to handle that and see how we move forward in terms of getting the right level of competition within the team, so there is no news on that at the moment.”
‘I am very happy with Kepa. I think shooting I’m not sure if I could have done better, but I saw a little more confidence in how he was playing.
I am happy with him. Kepa is here, he is our goalkeeper and I am happy with him. If we bring competition, it will be competition, that’s the nature of Chelsea. That goes through the entire squad [but] we’ll see. ‘
Lampard delivered full debuts to Timo Werner and Kai Havertz on the south coast.
The club has already made six senior signings this season, but Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva weren’t fit enough to play the Seagulls.
Chelsea was also left without Christian Pulisic after the American felt mild hamstring pain, but Lampard hopes some of his new faces will fit in next week when the Blues host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
