Gareth Southgate praised Reece James for his ‘amazing’ England debut, but insists that The Chelsea defender needs to “learn his lesson” after being sent off against Denmark.

In his full international debut, James had an impressive performance at Wembley on Wednesday night despite England falling to a 1-0 defeat in the Nations League clash.

James’ impressive debut was somewhat overshadowed by the red card shown to him after the loss.

Southgate said: ‘That’s a lesson you have to learn. He had an amazing debut, he has impressed me all week.

“Until that moment he had shown great maturity. It ended up being something that shouldn’t have happened, but all week it has made a positive impression. ‘

James was the second England player to see red against Denmark, with Manchester United captain Harry Maguire sent off in the first half after two final challenges.

Just minutes after Maguire was sent off, Denmark won a penalty and former Premier League star Christian Eriksen scored what turned out to be the winner from point of view.

When asked if England have a discipline problem, Southgate added: ‘It’s an obvious question they are going to ask us. We have put ourselves in unnecessary positions off the field.

“Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire’s reds here, one justified yellow, one not so sure.” We have to learn from that because if you go down to 10, historically that means we’re out, especially if you’re doing it for an hour. ‘

Southgate also insisted that he was “proud” of his England team despite the defeat that left his hopes in the Nations League in ruins.

“I was very proud of the performance,” Southgate said.

“I thought we were excellent with 11 men and we caused all kinds of problems for them on our right side.

‘The [Maguire] expulsion changes everything and the penalty. It’s a foul for Kyle Walker and I don’t see the foul at all. The less said about it, the better.
