Frank Lampard has played down his dispute on the touchline with José Mourinho, revealing that he scoffed at his opposite number’s constant dialogue with the referee, but insisting he was just ‘having fun’ with the Tottenham manager.

The Portuguese coach outpointed his former player as Spurs beat their London rivals on penalties to advance to the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup.

It didn’t start out as a happy reunion, however, as the pair became embroiled in a heated exchange on the sidelines for around half an hour, with Mourinho apparently frustrated as the Chelsea manager continually left his technical area.

Mourinho reportedly yelled, ‘Fuck Frank, when you’re losing 3-0 you’re not standing here’, referring to Chelsea’s last game in which they were 3-0 down at half-time. against West Brom.

But, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Lampard quickly clarified the situation and insisted there was no animosity on his part.

He said, ‘We were having fun, I get along well with José. He said that he talks more with the referee than with his players, I have great respect for José.

“Everything was fine in the end and that will never change.”

Mourinho also played down the situation, insisting that his teammate is a “fantastic coach”.

‘We don’t need to be the protagonists of the touchline. When they lost the last game 3-0 [against West Brom] I was sad for him because he was depressed and quiet. I don’t need to say anything to him because he is a fantastic coach. ‘

Mourinho outscored Lampard on the field as Spurs won on penalties and Mason Mount missed Chelsea’s fifth and final penalty.

The game started well for the Blues, with Timo Werner opening his account for the West London club after his move from RB Leipzig and putting his team 1-0 up.

The Spurs improved in the second half and finally got their goal in the 83rd minute through Erik Lamela, when the game went to penalties.

All shots from the spot went both ways, until Mount stepped forward and slammed his effort into the post, sending the Spurs into the next round.
