Chelsea’s new £ 71m signing Kai Havertz scored a hat-trick as the Blues defeated Barnsley to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

They were the 21-year-old German international’s first goals for the club after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.

Tammy Abraham had overtaken the Blues with a good ending for the hosts.

Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud were also right when Frank Lampard’s team broke through at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues will visit Tottenham or Leyton Orient in the next round.

Spurs’ game against the League Two team was canceled on Tuesday after several of the Leyton Orient squad tested positive for coronavirus.

Discussions continue on the implications of not holding the third round match on Tuesday, and an additional update will be provided in due course.

Havertz shines as Blues shows off new guys

Havertz was one of only three players who kept their places from Chelsea defeated 2-0 by Liverpool at the weekend.

Central defender Thiago Silva was one of those hired by Lampard when the 36-year-old former Paris St-Germain made his first appearance with the club.

The Brazilian enjoyed a relatively comfortable hour before breaking through, but it was Havertz who stole the limelight.

Barnsley’s Cauley Woodrow had forced Willy Caballero to make a good save with a long-range effort early on.

But once Abraham pounced on a sloppy defense to get past former Blues goalkeeper Brad Collins in the 19th minute, the game looked beyond the Championship side.

Havertz then held on to Mason Mount’s pass after a clever mannequin from Abraham and slipped a left foot effort into the bottom corner to open his Chelsea account.

Barkley made the triple after the break before a good move from Abraham sent Havertz up for a simple shot from inside the box.

The attacking midfielder came into third place after beating goalkeeper Collins to another pass from Abraham, then was replaced by another new signing on left-back Ben Chilwell.

Newcomer Chilwell, who arrived from Leicester City last month, was quick to offer insight into why Chelsea were willing to pay £ 45m for him as he threw a cross for Giroud to take sixth place from the hosts.
