Huge crowds were represented in Liverpool city center as pubs, bars and restaurants closed at 10pm under the new curfew rules.
People said the city was busier than they had seen in months, as customers were asked to leave hospitality venues early, in accordance with the latest government restrictions imposed earlier this week.
Photos shared on social media showed crowds outside the central station and people queuing for public transport.
One Twitter user said: “The city is an absolute disgrace, a shame for anyone who gets involved in such crowds.”
Another wrote: “What a stupid idea to have a curfew, I haven’t seen the city with this choker in months.”
A third said: “Strikes at 10pm and the city turns into an intolerable drunken mess. #ChuckingOutTime.”
One photo showed groups gathering in front of Bargain Booze.
Sharing the photo on Twitter, ECHO reporter Emilia Bona said: “In the city for wasting time and this is the situation.
“Two full buses even before we approach them and they are queuing next to the stop. This is not working.”
The scenes were in stark contrast to Friday night, when it rained heavily and popular areas of the city were deserted.
The new rules for hospitality came in on Thursday, meaning that Friday was the first weekend night revelers were sent home early when venues closed.
On Friday afternoon, Merseyside Police issued a statement to remind people of the city of the rules for this weekend.
A spokesperson said: “Merseyside Police are reminding local residents to stay safe and follow the new Covid-19 guidance, ahead of the first weekend in Merseyside under the latest new regional and national restrictions.”
