Champions League results LIVE! Latest news and reaction: Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern win, Real Madrid lose

[ad_1]

It was a good night for Liverpool and Manchester City as they both successfully started their Champions League group stage campaigns.

Liverpool were below their best but eliminated Dutch Ajax in Amsterdam thanks to Nicolas Tagliafico’s own goal, while City had to work hard for their 3-1 home win over Porto.

On the other hand, the reigning champions, Bayern Munich, began their title defense with a resounding 4-0 at Atlético de Madrid, while Romelu Lukaku’s double earned him a point for Inter Milan against Borussia Monchengladbach .

Earlier in the night, there was a huge surprise when a Shakhtar Donetsk team that saw their team decimated by positive coronavirus tests scored a famous 3-2 win at Real Madrid.

Flick: We scored four beautiful goals

It’s safe to say that Hansi Flick was quite pleased with his Bayern Munich squad after they began their title defense with a resounding 4-0 win over Atlético Madrid.

“Our game was good tonight,” Flick told reporters. “It was a difficult task, but we mastered it. Our efficiency today was good and I am very satisfied. It is very important to win that first game.

“We were physically present. That was important, being there, winning those situations one-on-one. We had a match plan and we applied it, playing four beautiful goals.”

Klopp: ‘We were good enough to win’

Ajax 0-1 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp looked frustrated on the bench tonight, but then declared himself happy enough with Liverpool’s winning start to the campaign.

“Good enough, good enough to win the game,” he told BT Sport. “That’s what you need. But of course I think both teams can play football better. It was pretty wild at times.”

“The field was really tough, it was deep, a little muddy. Maybe you can’t see it from the outside, but it was like that because both teams seemed really exhausted at first.

“But you need to score a goal, we did it. We didn’t take our chances, which is a bit embarrassing. Ajax had a big one with the post directly after half time and of course when you only have 1 -0 until, these things they can pass.

“But overall I’m really good with the game because it wasn’t our sunny, bright, world-class soccer day, but especially in a tournament like the Champions League, you still need a result and we got it.”

City ‘fighting’, says Gundogan

Despite his brilliant free kick and a huge win for Manchester City, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was quite depressed in his post-match interview.

“If I’m honest, we are fighting right now,” he told BT Sport. “Fernandinho left at the end, we have players playing in different positions. I am not 100% because I had Covid, we are not all at the same moment.

“That is the challenge of this season, it will not end for a while. It will not be difficult for Pep to choose an XI because the players are going to be tired.”

Milner praises Fabinho’s display in Van Dijk’s absence

Ajax 0-1 Liverpool

James Milner told BT Sport: “They were well organized, they played football well and we have had a week of ups and downs, so it was important to recover, which we did and I did not expect less from this group of players.

“Fabinho is an elite player and the best players can adapt and he did. He has played there before and he played very well. I thought it was a good team performance because it was difficult, it was a physical battle in difficult conditions.”

A pretty good week in Europe for English teams, led by Manchester United’s tremendous victory in Paris last night.

Manchester City and Liverpool joined them in getting their campaigns started with victories tonight, with only Chelsea’s 0-0 draw against Sevilla a minor failure.
