American actor Chadwick Boseman, best known for his role in Black Panther, died of cancer, his family says.

The 43-year-old man died at his home in Los Angeles with his wife and family by his side.

Boseman had not spoken publicly about his diagnosis.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said in the statement.

“From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and several others, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was his career honor to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

Boseman first rose to fame playing real-life figures: baseball great Jackie Robinson at 42 in 2013 and later as musician James Brown in Get on Up in 2014.

However, it will be like the headline Black Panther in the hit 2018 movie that will be most remembered.

The film was the first superhero film to earn a best picture nomination at the Oscars.
