Carlos Sainz agrees that 90 percent of drivers would win in a Mercedes, but feels few would beat Lewis Hamilton if they drove the same cars.
Hamilton He has once again sailed into the World Championship in 2020, closing out title number seven with three races to spare.
Meanwhile, his team sealed the Constructors’ Championship even earlier, making it seven in a row for Mercedes.
Earlier this season Max Verstappen claimed somewhat controversially that the German team is so dominant that the vast majority of the grid could win if they drove the car that Hamilton has.
“I have a lot of respect for what they have accomplished. I’m not frustrated with Lewis in a Mercedes car, ”said the Dutchman.
“To be honest, 90 percent of the field could win in that car. Nothing against Lewis, he’s a great driver, but the car is so dominant.
“Okay, maybe others aren’t as dominant as Lewis, but you accept the situation you’re in and try to make the most of it.”
Sainz was asked about his former teammate’s comments in an interview and admitted that what the Red Bull man said is likely true to some degree.
However, he also believes that if Hamilton, along with half the drivers, were to drive a Mercedes, the Brit would still be one of the best, highlighting his ability to handle pressure.
“A delicate question. I agree with Max that 90 percent would probably win in the Mercedes, in the race and in qualifying, but if you put half the field against Hamilton in a Mercedes, then 90 percent of them wouldn’t win it. ” said. motorsport-total.com.
“However, if you take Hamilton out of the competition, then everyone in the current field would probably win with a Mercedes. That pretty much describes what is happening in Formula 1 today, but also that Hamilton is one of the best, even if he has the best car.
“I look very carefully at how Hamilton performs under pressure. How he manages to dominate all sectors so well in Q3 and take pole position, even if he only has a slight advantage over [Valtteri] Bottas.
“In Austria, he beat Bottas for a second and a half in the rain. You can do things that not everyone can do. But it would have to be his teammate to give even more details.
