Sebastien Haller scored two goals in the first half to help a much-changed West Ham beat League One Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The Frenchman scored the goal from Andriy Yarmolenko and added a second header with a precise cross from Robert Snodgrass.
Chuks Aneke and Jonny Williams forced saves from Darren Randolph when Charlton had a positive spell after the break.
But Felipe Anderson sealed the victory after a good job from Manuel Lanzini.
David Moyes’ Hammers will host Premier League Leeds or League One Hull in the third round.
Center-back Issa Diop was the only player to keep his place in West Ham’s Premier League defeat to Newcastle on Sunday, but it was Haller, signed for £ 45m by Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2019, who held the center stage.
He dragged his first chance wide after some great skill from right-back Ben Johnson, but managed by being in the right place to open the scoring and then finding the net with a typical one-goal header.
Alfie Doughty showed flashes for Charlton down the left and Aneke’s introduction at half-time gave them an extra boost, but Lanzini’s quick feet hit Anderson and Haller came close to completing his hat-trick only to see his goal-scoring effort blocked. by Deji Oshilaja.
Eighteen-year-old midfielder Harrison Ashby entered his debut for the Hammers in the final 10 minutes when Moyes turned his attention to the Premier League game at Arsenal on Saturday.
West Ham boss David Moyes:
“Probably the only disappointment is that we should have won more comfortably.
“But Seb [Haller] getting a couple of goals will be good for your confidence. We had Michail Antonio scoring for us at the end of last season and now we expect Seb to have a scoring streak.
“Josh [Cullen] he has done really well. He’s a great guy in the place, he works incredibly hard to improve. I thought you did well tonight. “
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer:
“In the first half we looked very nervous, we were very afraid to give the ball away.
“But at halftime I told them to believe you can play, and I thought we were the best team.
“The only thing missing was that final pass, that final finish. And that’s what you pay for.”
