Cádiz beat Barcelona for the first time in La Liga since 1991 when former Manchester City striker Álvaro Negredo scored a famous goal.

It was the first home win in the top flight against any rival of the promoted Cádiz since 2006 and puts him four points above Barcelona.

Álvaro Giménez put Cádiz ahead before Pedro Alcalá’s own goal equalized Barça, seventh.

Negredo took advantage of a chaotic defense to score the winning goal.

The 35-year-old, who had only been on the field for 44 seconds, closed out Marc-Andre ter Stegen before circling the slippery Frenkie de Jong to take advantage of an empty net.

Setback for Koeman and Barça

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman, who played in 1991 when Cádiz last beat Barça, seemed to have turned a corner after a poor start.

They had won six of their last seven matches in all competitions, but are now 12 points behind leaders Atlético de Madrid after 10 matches. They are already six points away from the Champions League places.

Barça have already conceded several sloppy goals this season and were left behind when Ter Stegen prevented Oscar Mingueza from scoring an own goal, but Giménez shot from the line.

He benefited from an own goal by Alcalá to equalize before Clement Lenglet could not control Jordi Alba’s throw-in to give former Real Madrid forward Negredo the opportunity to score the winning goal.

Messi hit 10 of Barça’s 21 shots, five of them saved by Jeremias Ledesma, but in truth Cádiz deserved the victory with a counterattack masterclass that was a success despite having only 18% possession.
