Ashley Barnes scored her first goal in more than a year when Burnley beat the Wolves at Turf Moor to move three points out of the Premier League relegation zone.
It was a convincing performance from Sean Dyche’s side, who have now lost only once in their last seven games and are unbeaten in four games.
Barnes nodded at the back post to put the hosts ahead of center Charlie Taylor after a quick counterattack in the first half.
Chris Wood then reacted faster to hit from close range and double Burnley’s lead when the Wolves failed to clear a free throw after the break.
Teenager Fabio Silva shot from the penalty spot for his first Wolves goal at the end, but the hosts could see his victory.
It’s only the second time Burnley has scored more than once in a top flight game this season, and they could have had more.
Josh Brownhill threw an effort to the crossbar and Rui Patricio saved well to deny Wood after a good footwork from the New Zealand forward.
By contrast, the Wolves had trouble seriously upsetting the Clarets’ back four before their late pitch and Nuno Espirito Santo’s team is still 11th in the table.
Burnley rises to 16th, with a game in hand for those around them.
Clarets hitting way at Christmas
Burnley boss Dyche continues to bring out the best in his team and both he and potential new club owners they will be delighted with its recent revival after a slow start to the season.
Dyche will hope that whoever buys the club will do so in time for a January team investment, but in the meantime his team is improving.
Burnley was the lowest scorer in the division and had scored just six goals in 12 games prior to this game, but Dyche promised that “the statistics will start to pay us back.”
He was proven right when his two forwards found the net, with Barnes heading for his first goal since a 3-0 win at Watford in November last year and Wood his third goal of the season.
It was the first time the hosts had scored two goals in a Premier League match at Turf Moor since February, but nothing less than they deserved.
Josh Benson’s foul on Silva in the penalty area made the final minutes unnecessarily nervous.
But before that, Ben Mee and James Tarkowski once again looked almost unbeatable at the heart of the Clarets’ defense, as they limited the visitors to very few opportunities.
More to follow.
