Bruno Fernandes explains why he resigned from penalty shooting duties leaving Paul Scholes puzzled

Bruno Fernandes gave up penalty duties for Marcus Rashford in the Champions League because he made a promise to his Manchester United teammate at the weekend.

Fernandes is United’s dedicated penalty taker, but the Portuguese, who was on a hat-trick against Istanbul Basaksehir, allowed Rashford to take a penalty on Tuesday night.

The English international dispatched the penalty, but the decision to forego the scoring opportunity left Paul Scholes baffled.

At the halftime break, Scholes said on BT Sport: “I don’t get it,” said Scholes. “Fernandes has taken all the penalties when he has played. He has a chance to make a hat-trick on a European night, I don’t understand.

“But ultimately, we get the same result, so there is not too much damage.”

Fernandes was asked to explain his act of charity after the match, revealing that he had made a promise to Rashford after he scored a penalty against West Brom the last time.

“That is not the point. Of course, all the players want to score a hat-trick,” Fernandes said.

“But after the Premier League game I told Rashford he would stick with the next one.

“So I remembered it, and also because Rashford is one of the top scorers in the Champions League.

“I think it will be important for him to go ahead and have that confidence.”

“But like I said, it doesn’t matter who takes the penalties, the most important thing is to score. The team scores. When the team scores, I score too.”
